COPAL - 5 color reduction print
Reduction Woodblock print on Okawara Paper, 2018
Edition size: 10
Paper Size: h 18” x w 18”
This image depicts the mineral COPAL, which is a yellow to red-orange resin obatained from various tropical trees. It can be found in Tanzania, China, brazil, and outher South American countries and is used in varnishes, laquers and inks.
The image was hand carved into birch wood and then printed in an edition of 5. Prints are signed and number by the artist, (me, Christopher Hartshorne).
This is a five color reduction print. A reduction print is a layered color print made from a single carved block that is progressively reduced by carving away more material after each color layer is printed. The artist prints the lightest color first, then carves more away from the block to print the next, darker color on top, repeating this process until the final multi-layered image is complete.
